A significant number of Afghan refugees currently reside in foreign countries, having been compelled to migrate due to various underlying factors. However, the central question this study seeks to address is: What are the political and security implications of the presence of these Afghan refugees abroad on the homeland, Afghanistan?
This research employs a historical (retrospective) methodology, which is considered a suitable and important approach for examining political and social issues. The findings of the study indicate that, as in the past, the presence of Afghan refugees in foreign countries has had substantial impacts on Afghanistan, and similar effects are likely to persist under current circumstances. This is attributed to the fact that historical conditions do not fundamentally differ from those of the present.
Among these impacts, political and security consequences are particularly significant. While some of these effects may have positive dimensions, the negative aspects are predominant. The study concludes by emphasizing that the phenomenon of mass migration constitutes an overall negative trend for the country. Therefore, it is imperative that this issue be addressed. The most fundamental solution, as identified in the study, is the elimination of all root causes that drive forced migration.
